General Description: North American walnut is attractive, tight-grained, and polishes to a very smooth finish. It improves with age, finishing beautifully and stands as a decorative hardwood which is widely used throughout the world. Janka Hardness: 1010 Color: Dark brown to purplish black. There is a very distinct difference between the creamy white sapwood and the almost chocolate brown to purplish black color in the heartwood. When kiln-dried, walnut hardwood tends toward a dull brown color, but when air-dried can become a rich purplish-brown. Color Change: Black walnut darkens with age, beautifully. Grain: Noted for its beautiful grain, the wood is generally straight-grained,but sometimes with waves or curls too. This species produces a greater variety of figure types than any other. The wood develops a rich patina that grows more lustrous with age. Finishing: Finishes well with a natural finish. Characteristics: A favored wood for using in contrast with lighter-colored species. Walnut is a popular furniture wood around the world due to its natural durability. |
