The type of finish you chose will depend on how you plan to use your
kitchen countertop, island top, or butcher block. Whether you plan to cut on it, whether it needs to be
water-proof, etc.
Mineral Oil
This finish is typically
chosen for tops that will be used as a cutting surface. Mineral oil
preserves the top and will not go rancid over time as vegetable oil will. The
mineral oil we use is FDA approved for food surfaces. Tops with this
finish will need to have additional oil applied on a regular basis.
See the Care and Maintenance page
for more information.
Waterlox
We use Waterlox tung oil based finishes on our
tops. This finish is durable, waterproof, resists household chemicals,
and is easy to maintain (see our Care
and Maintenance page for more information). Waterlox is available in a satin,
semi gloss, and a
high gloss finish.
All tops that are treated with a this finish receive a minimum of four
coats on the visible side of the top and three coats on sides that are not
visible. Six coats are typical for tops with an integrated sink. The following information comes
directly from the Waterlox Web-site:
-
Gives a rich, hand-rubbed look that enhances the grain.
-
Unique blend of tung oil
and resin penetrates deeper and seals wood fibers beneath the surface.
-
Provides a natural looking protective finish
that won’t chip, peel, crack or wrinkle.
-
Locks out water and damage from spills,
including alcohol, coffee, tea and household chemicals.
-
Touch ups can be done at any time. Just apply
more Waterlox. Sanding down to bare wood is not required.
Note: We have been using Waterlox tung oil based
finishes for about 8 years and have been very pleased with the results.
In fact, this is the finish that is on our own kitchen table, island top, and
all our cabinets. |
